FLIGHT COMPENSATION GUIDE

Delayed flight compensation

For many covered flights, arriving at the final destination three or more hours late may qualify for compensation. The airline, route and cause all matter.

When does a delay qualify?

Under EU261, arriving three or more hours late can trigger compensation, unless the airline can demonstrate extraordinary circumstances and the required reasonable measures. The threshold is generally assessed on arrival at the final destination, not the departure time.

How much can you claim?

Depending on the route and distance, fixed compensation is generally €250, €400 or €600 per eligible passenger. Certain rerouting situations and long-distance routes can affect the amount.

What should you keep?

Save boarding passes, ticket confirmations, the flight number, airline explanations, written delay notifications and the actual arrival time. Keep receipts for reasonable expenses too.

What about connecting flights?

When the connection is part of a single booking, arrival at the final destination may be the relevant delay. Separately booked itineraries are more complicated.
